What to do with Clotilda?

August 5, 2019 by Georgia Mullen Leave a Comment

Should the newly found slave ship Clotilda be enshrined in this historic former slave town?

The last ship to bring slaves to the United States was found buried in mud in the Mobile River in 2018. The business of importing slaves was outlawed in 1808, but the Clotilda’s owner made a bet that he could still do it in 1860. He won. To hide his crime–after selling of the 110 captives–the ship’s owner burned the vessel and let it sink to the river bottom.

Ben Raines, a journalist and filmmaker, found it, but the question now is what to do with it. Read about the several options he suggests in this Los Angeles Times article.
